Profile: The
department was started in the year 1952 and at present is
headed by Sri B. V. Krishna Rao, M.Sc., M.Phil. Sri Krishna
Rao has specialized in Limnology and Fisheries and has worked
on Serum Cholesterol and worm load in Swiss albino mice during
experimental ancylostomiasis for his M. Phil. He has published a paper in Pakistan Journal of
Zoology. He is the co-author for the subject 'Systematics and
Anatomy of Invertebrates' of M.Sc. Zoology under distance
education programme ofAcharya
Nagarjuna
University. He along with Sri C.
Ravindrakumar, of Botany prepared and submitted the UGC X plan
proposals for developmental assistance for UG courses of the
college. His contribution in making Golden Jubilee Exhibition
in Zoology was appreciated by one and all who visited the
exhibition. He effectively uses modern teaching methods which
include film strips, transparencies etc. He has received
training in the field of Eco-Toxicology from Dr. A.S. Murthy
in the analysis of pesticide residues of natural waters by
using thin Layer Chromatography and Gas
Chromatography.
Sri Y Nageswara Rao, M.Sc., Lecturer has specialized in
"Symbilogy", Sri K.V. Babu M.Sc., has specialized in Fisheries
and he uses modern teaching methods which include using of
charts, tables, models and audio visual techniques. Sri G.
Srinivasa Rao, M.Sc., Lecturer had specialized in "Cytology".
The Department was founded by Prof. Late Dr. K.
Satyalinga Swamy and assisted by Dr. K. Narasimha Rao during
1952-53. The Department of Zoology has acquired its own
significance under the leadership of Late Sri T.V. Siva Sastry
(1953-1989), a dedicated and diligent luminary from
Annamalai
University
. He led
the Department for 36 Years and progressed with machinery zeal
to impart quality education at the higher level with utmost
care. He was instrumental in developing the Department to its
present position. Sri Siva Sastry was the pioneer in
initiating many innovative and student friendly Programmes to
create a perfect and vibrant environment for learners without
being alienated from the moral and ethical values. He was an
outstanding author of any text books and guides at
Intermediate and Under Graduate levels. Some of his pivotal
publications are B.Sc., " Jeevavarna Sastram(Ecology) &
Janthu Bhougolika Sastram(Zoogeography)", 1972 and B.Sc., "
Prayoga Deepika (Laboratory Manual)", 1973 of the Telugu
Academy; B.Sc., - "Invertebrata", B.Sc. - "Chordata" (1977),
and B.Sc., - Cell Biology, Genetics and Organic Evolution"
(1982) of the Maruthi Publishers; Intermediate Text Book of
Zoology", Volume I(First Year), 1979 and Volume II ( Second
Year), 1980, and "Intermediate Guide-cum-Test Papers"1983),
Volume I and Volume II, of the Sarvodaya Publishers. Major B.
Daya Sagar (1961 - 1995) was the author for the book
"Intermediate Zoology (First year)", 1980 of the Vikram
Publishers.
Over the years the Department has been strengthed with
well versed faculty with a vision for the future. The
hierarchic team composed of scholors and vesatile
personalities with professional distinction has made
significant contribution in enriching the department by leaps
and bounds. The faculty who worked past were Sri A.
Venkateswara Rao, Sri L. Janaki Ramaiah, Sri Major B. Daya
Sagar, Dr. K.S. Swamy, Sri. K. Tirupathi Rao, Sri M.
Venkateswarlu, Dr. J Siva Kumari, Sri. J. Gangadhara Rao, Sri
K Nageswara Rao, Sri. Venkata Ramaiah, Sri. N.C.P. Bharat,
Smt. K Srilatha, Dr. V. Sankara Rao, Late Sri J.
Koteswara Rao and their contributions to the development of
the department were well appreciated.
The Department is well equipped with physical and
intellectual infrastructure which include incubator,
Microtome, Binocular Microscopes projection Microscope Slide
projector, Over head Projector, Photo Electric Colorimeter,
Digital pH meter, Digital D.O. Meter, Medical Centrifuge, Etc.
Other Important unique collections in the department include
Sea Cow, dolphin, Axis deer, Hyena, Scaly anteater, Badger,
Civwet Cat, Fox, Porcupine, Flamingo, Anhinga, Heron, Peacock,
Ibis, Eagle, Hoope, Rattle Snake, Glass Snake, Coral Snake,
Alligator lizard, Monitor lizard, Horned toad, Moloch,
Limbless lizard, flying lizard, Mimic lizard, Salamander,
Newt, Triturus, Descognathus, Psedobranchus, Eurycea,
Petromyzon, Myxine, Sturgeon fish, Gar-pike, Bow fin, Spoon-billed fish,
Lobe-finned fish, Lungfish, Glass rope sponge, Marine leech,
Peripatus, Bonellia, Ostrich egg, and many organs, models and
embryonic stages of humans.
During the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the college
(1976), the Zoology museum has attracted the attention of the
then Education Minister and other dignitaries. At that time,
the DHE has acclaimed our college zoology museum as the best
Museum in the state. During Golden Jubilee Celebrations also
the
Departmental
Museum
has received
laurels from people of various walks of life including
ministers, VIP’s and General
Public.
